Freedom From vs. Freedom For

The essence of freedom has a double edge. It can be exercised as an oppositional force against what is unwanted and unwelcome. And it can be asserted as a creative force for what is inspiring, innovative and life giving. On this Fourth of July weekend Fr. Garrett explains how Jesus' sending out of his followers to bless others reveals God's desire to empower us for serving our neighbor and bettering our world. Freedom in Christ is not given for the pursuit of self-indulgence that puts us in competition with one another, but rather so that we can become stronger together by responding to one another's needs and celebrating one another's achievements.
