Already and Not Yet
Memories of past events condition our expectations for their repetition in the future. The season of Advent (latin for coming) in the church calendar is one in which we look forward to an event that has already happened. If that makes you do a double take, you're not alone. In this sermon Fr. Garrett encourages you to both remember what you have heard and seen and anticipate the unexpected at the same time. The stories of the events leading up to and including Christmas and the rituals we partake in each December are familiar to many. But we participate in them and encounter God through them in a different place in our lives each year. Where you are right now and what you need in your relationship with God this Advent season has never happened before. Be expectant and invite God to come into your life with the hope of new possibilities and opportunities this Advent.
