Nah, That’s Okay, I’m Good
"No! I can do it myself!" Anyone who has spent time with a young preschooler has heard these words and seen the determination of spirit that comes with them. After starting our lives nearly helpless and completely dependent, that first discovery of the possibly of independence flashes brightly. The trouble is, sometimes that insistence on doing for ourselves and rejecting any outside contributions to our business, can persist well beyond childhood, becoming a vulnerability. In this sermon Fr. Garrett explores human reactions to the Biblical assertion that "nothing can separate us from the love of God" (Romans 8:26-39), and asks the question, "How close do we really want to be to God, and God to us?" There is blessing in gaining the wisdom and humility to trust that, while we can do many things for ourselves, inviting God to join us in the endeavors often works out ever better.
